England batsman-catcher Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson’s future at Test level have been thrown into doubt by an ongoing investigation by the cricket authorities. Both sides had to deal with heavy calls for their actions on Monday night when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) admitted it had started an investigation into an altercation at a London nightclub at the end of the day. It was in the early hours of Monday morning, hours after England had comprehensively outclassed New Zealand at Lord’s. There has been an immediate reaction and the team have pushed the announcement of their squad for the next Test at The Oval back. Both are widely expected to miss that game and it is said that Stokes is considering his options as captain.

The Midnight Encounter in Chelsea
The confusion came after a gang of England players got together in London after their win on Sunday afternoon. Stokes and Atkinson stayed out beyond the team’s late night curfew, though several members of the team had made it back home or to the hotel by the early morning. They arrived at a Chelsea show ground where they met members of Saracens rugby club who were there for the end of their own season.
The Telegraph Sport reported that there was some altercation involving a Saracens academy player. The rugby player has reportedly hit Atkinson with a punch. But the strike did not hit the fast bowler, and instead hit an ECB security guard who was accompanying the cricketers to supervise them. The guard had to be stitched up for the wounds. Both men were unhurt in the melee, and one source told the BBC that the two cricketers weren’t the first to start it.
Stricter Rules Following Past Scandals
The ECB is facing significant problems with the incident as it has implemented strict rules over the past year. The cricket board had implemented a new code of conduct for players, as well as a mandatory midnight curfew for matches, following a series of off-field issues during last year’s Ashes tour, when complaints were raised about drinking and lack of discipline among the players. This curfew is in effect even the nights after the end of the Test match.
On Monday evening the ECB released a short statement saying it is investigating a “breach of team protocols. The board has also informed the Cricket Regulator, an independent disciplinary body that has the authority to impose official suspensions, fines and formal warning to a player for any breach of the behavioural code.

Saracens Rugby Club have also initiated their own investigation into the matter after finding out one of their academy players was involved. The club issued a statement confirming that they are working to get the facts, and are in contact with the appropriate parties.
Senior rugby officials in England are thought to have rallied behind Stokes, arguing that the academy player in question has a history of causing trouble and that it would be “unfortunate” if the England cricket captain were to be sacked over something he did not trigger. There is no evidence of police involvement and no official charges have been brought against police by the venue.
The effect on the next Test Match
But England’s second Test squad for New Zealand, for the match opening at The Oval on June 17, is now in complete disarray. The Cricket Regulator is yet to officially announce the suspension, though the ECB has suspended the formation of the squad. It is believed both will be kept on the bench for the match and some have suggested their absence could be justified as a “rest period” until the investigation is completed rather than a formal disciplinary suspension.
The absence of Atkinson at this point is a terrible time in his career. The 28-year-old bowler was a key role player in the win at Lord’s, and picked up 5 wickets for 30 runs in the second innings to secure the win.
We need to face our own doubts and our own history. We must confront our own doubts and our own past.
The circumstances have thrown a spanner in the works in terms of the Test captaincy. Stokes is believed to be very frustrated with the development and is rethinking his continued stay at the helm, joining head coach Brendon McCullum in April 2022.
The double inevitably reminds people of a big moment in Stokes’ career back in 2017 when he was arrested after a late-night street fight outside a Bristol night club. It took him his vice-captaincy from England and a trip to the Ashes, but in court he was acquitted of affray. In the past few years, his lifestyle had changed drastically, as he had mostly stopped drinking alcohol to help his physical recovery from chronic knee injuries.
Stokes had recalled to journalists in his post-match news conference that high pressure had been surrounding the match and that he was looking forward to sharing a beer with his teammates “to celebrate the win” – ironically just hours before the nightclub incident.
Bear in mind that the captaincy could change.Remember that the captaincy may change.
Stokes has been ruled out of the clash at The Oval and vice-captain Harry Brook is the automatic replacement for the captain. There are complications with this transition as well. Last year, Brook was also in trouble: He was slapped by a nightclub bouncer in Wellington, shortly before captaining England in a white-ball game, and he was fined an exorbitant amount and given a final warning by the ECB.
It has also caused a resurgence of the head coach’s philosophy of Brendon McCullum, who recently gave his players a pep talk on their duty, telling them that nothing good would come after midnight and that they should steer clear of any actions that could end up on the front pages of newspapers. The ECB investigation is likely to progress rapidly as the board seek to complete the squad by the time they get to their next game next week.
