Gamers scrambled to get the closest possible pre-order of the new game set for release on November 19th.
The hype was everywhere and it still is everywhere. We are privy to the release dates, we now have the confirmed pricing for the title – eighty dollars for the standard edition and one hundred dollars for the Ultimate Edition. However, when you take a moment to read beyond the marketing hype on the press releases, on the digital storefronts, you find an unpleasant and entirely frustrating reality. There is literally no advantage to pre-purchasing the digital version of the game now.
Your Download Isn’t Going to Go Out of Stock Gamers today are living on the edge, right? The fear of missing out has always fueled the idea of pre-ordering video games. For so long, if you didn’t put down ten or twenty dollars to save your game from going out of stock you were guaranteed a sad ride home with no video games in sight.
It seemed so many years ago, but that era’s game supply and demand no longer has anything on the digital market today.
You don’t actually fear missing out if you try to pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI from the PS Store or the Microsoft store. Their supply of digital game copies is as infinite as the cosmos. There is literally nothing stopping you from logging on November 19th, the actual release day, five minutes before release, and starting the game download – no issues guaranteed. There’s simply nothing “safe” about giving huge corporations your money months in advance for something you, as a consumer, will never have a scarcity to obtain.
Stay in the banks, keep your cash within the confines of your own checking account.
Rockstar Isn’t Really Offering a Free Item The game publisher has often tempted people to jump the queue in the hopes they will purchase the game prematurely. Rockstar, in this case, is doing a spectacular job using their ‘Vintage Vice City Pack’ as enticement. It promises a ‘85 Vapid Stanier sedan’, and a cool linen outfit with an exclusive accessory in the style of classic Vice City resident Tommy Vercetti.
It sounds amazing and it is quite the package for those willing to purchase it early!
However, after actually clicking through to see if you want to be amongst the firsts for these bonuses, there is a very stark revelation. The “pre-order bonus” wording is misleading Rockstar has explicitly stated that any gamer that buys the game by November 20th receives the aforementioned pack. This is significant since the game officially releases on the 19th. If you simply buy the game on November 19th after reading reviews, watch a few live gameplay videos on Twitch, and make an educated purchase – you’re guaranteed to obtain the ‘Vintage Vice City Pack’ just as any player who paid up months prior.
Why Is There an Ultimate Edition The cost is at an extremely high amount. A total hundred-dollar purchase that’s completely virtual gives players access to 95 Grotti Cheetah with some luxury perks, and even more excitingly, a Dinka Enduro motorcycle! The Ultimate Edition has exclusive shops with in-game purchases such as 305 Stock.
There is really no need for this pre-ordering the digital game.
Rockstar has clearly said in the press that there’s a “Ultimate Edition Upgrade” that becomes obtainable for all customers at the earliest point of release day. This will definitely increase the chances for more individuals to be buying the game since if you wanted an Ultimate Edition purchase it’s never too late. In addition, these in-game items in the Ultimate Edition, such as the vehicles and the clothing will not vanish into thin air when you decide that you would like them! In the end, by choosing not to spend $100 dollars, no player is missing out on what the other one has purchased.
Early access hasn’t been added For the most part, many of today’s developers want you to pay an additional $30 dollars to get access to new games three days or even a week in advance. The video game industry certainly exploits these early access periods to maximize their revenue. However, Rockstar has completely ignored this trend.
Regardless of whether or not you are purchasing the eighty-dollar regular or one-hundred-dollar ultimate edition, all players will gain access to the game at the same time on November 19th.
There’s absolutely no special early access period available for gamers looking to beat their peers to Rockstar’s new map.
The Physical Version’s Special Perks As most gamers know, there are digital pre-orders, there is also a special physical copy of the game, but that’s just not for Grand Theft Auto V. Today, all games typically feature a massive file download – even Grand Theft Auto V with an estimation on total game size that will likely stretch into many gigabytes. Digital games typically allow pre-loading – where gamers can download much of the game and install it prior to its eventual release – on November 12, nearly seven days ahead of schedule so when the clock strikes midnight on the 19th the game is ready to be played.
For physical media copies, gamers would normally have to wait until launch day and then begin the installing process which could take hours.
Take-Two, however, has flipped the script on these pre-orders. Physical boxes contain only a download code – no actual disc – allowing retailers to hand them over on the 12th, ensuring that physical game collectors have the same benefit of getting a jumpstart on the lengthy download time. For digital purchasers who are just concerned with pre-loading their game – there is nothing to see here.
The Subscription Catch There are still some benefits for buying digital – the company threw in a complimentary GTA Plus subscription for one month. What exactly can you obtain from that “gift?” You receive some in-game cash and a variety of helpful bonuses that you may use in the existing GTA Online.
However, don’t be fooled, this isn’t just a gift from the gaming developers, to truly receive this gift, you will have to provide credit card details to activate your subscription and will receive it month-over-month unless it is canceled before the end date of the complimentary month.
The free month is merely one way for Rockstar and Take-Two to bump their subscription numbers across both PlayStation and Xbox prior to the release of their biggest title.
