Contrary to many initial reports which labelled Emraan Hashmi’s comeback film Awarapan 2 as a disaster at the box-office, numbers clearly indicate that the movie has performed impressively at the box office during its first few days.

The movie released on 14 August 2026 and has brought back Emraan Hashmi as Shivam Pandit, nearly two decades after the release of the original Awarapan. The movie also stars Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi and Suvinder Vicky. It has been directed by Nitin Kakkar, and produced by Vishesh Films.
The film faced a challenging task at the box-office as it arrived at the same time as the release of several other films and has had to compete with international film imports that are doing exceptionally well in theatres across India.
However, these first four days, however, paints a completely different picture.
Emraan Hashmi Gets A Mighty Opening
The Emraan Hashmi-starrer opened with impressive numbers at the box-office on Friday. Different trade sources provide different numbers but estimates place the total domestic collection for opening day at 22-27 crore. While Times Of India claimed an opening in the vicinity of 27 crore, calling it Hashmi’s biggest-ever opening, Indian Express claimed that Awarapan 2 had managed to rake in approximately 22 crore.
Regardless of the discrepancy between trade estimates, one fact remains. It wasn’t a slow opening for the movie.
The collections became even stronger on Saturday and Sunday. As per reports, the movie collected an additional 33.75 crore on Saturday and the three-day collection rose to over 80 crore. While Indian Express claimed that it grossed around 82 crore net across India within three days.
These figures are a stark contrast to reports indicating a movie struggling for eyeballs.
The film also overshadowed the total lifetime collections of the first film, Awarapan, in a flash. The original was a modest hit at the box office back in 2007, however, it achieved cult status with its music, emotional narrative and Emraan Hashmi’s performance.
Monday Witnessed A Drop
The most significant test for the movie was presented on Monday.
Like the majority of the movies released, the film saw a decline in collections on Monday. Reports suggest that the film collected nearly 9.25 crore net at the box-office on the fourth day according to Sacnilk as reported by NDTV. Despite the drop, the movie is still running in over 10,000 shows.
The drop on Monday will be a critical one to monitor, primarily owing to the astronomical figures accumulated over the weekend.
Not every opening blockbuster manages to sustain its initial momentum. Weekend collections at the box-office are usually higher than weekday numbers. In the case of Awarapan 2, however, the Monday collection managed to bring the movie’s total collection within touching distance of, or over, the 100 crore mark depending on the estimate being relied upon.
To outright call the movie a box office failure based on current numbers would be factually inaccurate.
Budget plays a significant factor
The estimated budget for the production of Awarapan 2 is approximately 45 crore as per a TOI box-office report. When this fact is considered, the first four-day collections clearly put the movie in a positive light. A movie with a production budget of 45 crore does not need massive collections compared to films that are made with a budget of 150-200 crore.
The movie had already emerged as a hit by the fourth day.
Numbers are still varied across different trade analysts. While some place the domestic net earnings at around 90 crore, others estimate that it may have already surpassed the 100 crore mark. The film has also witnessed rapid collections worldwide and Economic Times reports the worldwide gross collection at over 130 crore after the fourth day.
The final numbers can only be properly assessed when official trade figures are released and confirmed.
What Drove The Box-Office Success of Awarapan 2?
The number one contributor has to be the popularity of the original film, Awarapan.
Released in 2007, Awarapan was not a box-office behemoth during its run but has since gained immense popularity among viewers. Its music has become immensely popular, and Emraan Hashmi’s image from the period remained associated with romantic films.
The sequel has leaned heavily on this nostalgia.
The return of Shivam Pandit itself made the film a hot topic of conversation. For audiences that experienced the first installment years ago, having their favourite Hashmi portray the character once more provides that sense of familiarity. The soundtrack and references to the earlier film played a significant part before and after its release.
In the sequel, Shivam is drawn into another world of crime, loss and redemption as he gets into an unfortunate conflict when a woman is put in peril, the synopsis for the movie suggests. Although still retaining the emotional core of the original film, Awarapan 2 has added a layer of action.
Mixed Reviews
While the collection has been impressive, the audience and critical responses have not necessarily mirrored this.
Some critics lauded Hashmi’s performance and action sequences in the film. At the same time, other critics pointed out flaws with the plot in the second half and its climax.
Indian Express, however, noted its ‘fast first half’ and action sequences while finding the film loses its momentum later. They lauded Hashmi’s emotional performance, the soundtrack, and the beautiful locations as a major strength.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, this has not impacted the film’s box-office performance so far.
This is especially crucial given the fact that films don’t necessarily require excellent reviews to be financially successful. Factors like a well-known character, great music, a popular actor, and audience curiosity about a sequel can certainly bring in audiences to the movie theatres, particularly during a major holiday.
Emraan Hashmi Achieves His Biggest Solo Opening
The recent box office collection is also significant for Emraan Hashmi as an actor.
With more than two decades of experience in the Hindi film industry, the actor has had numerous successful phases in his career. However, his solo box-office numbers in recent years haven’t quite reached the peaks of his earlier days.
Awarapan 2 has certainly changed that narrative.
The opening collections for this film are being labelled as Emraan Hashmi’s biggest-ever solo film opening, and it has already made it one of the biggest Hindi releases of 2026 so far by the fourth day. Economic Times reported that after only four days, it’s already the highest-grossing solo Hashmi film globally.
The NextFew Days Will Decide It’sFate
The opening weekend alone has placed Awarapan 2 in a highly favourable position. The weekday collections are now key to determining its overall run.
The drop on Monday was indeed noted, however, the film continued to rake in substantial revenue post the weekend. Competition was high from other releases like Batwara 1947, and Hollywood films were also claiming a large share of screen and theatre bookings.
For now, the numbers clearly indicate a successful launch rather than a box-office disaster.
Awarapan 2 was released on 14th August and is just a few days old in theatres and its ultimate fate rests in its full theatrical run, distributor economics and how much it collects in the days ahead.
However, as on 18th August, box-office statistics paint a picture of success, with Awarapan 2 getting a phenomenal opening, crossing major box-office milestones in record time, and securing a spot as one of Emraan Hashmi’s highest-grossing solo theatrical releases to date.
