Aamadam, guftam ,barkhaastam

The BRICS annual summit meeting is taking place in New Delhi on 12th and 13th September 2026. The Presidentship of the organization rotates annually, and since 1st January India is the President, and hence it is hosting this year’s annual summit

In my opinion the meeting will only be another case of ‘Aamadam, guftam, barkhaastam’ ( a Persian expression meaning ” We came, gossiped, and then dispersed ), with zero haasildam ( i.e, nothing substantial achieved )

The organization was originally formed by 4 countries, Brazil, Russia, India, and China ( hence its name ), but now it consists of 11 countries ( 7 more countries, apart from the first 4, added later viz Indonesia, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Ethiopia ) and the following countries became partners in the organization viz Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam

USA and European countries are not in this organization, and perhaps BRICS was initially formed at the instance of China and Russia to oppose USA and its European allies, which they perceived as threats.

It is well known that today there are 2 powerful alliances in the world which are at loggerheads with each other viz (1) USA and Europe ( 2) China and Russia. They do not presently fight each other militarily, because both have nuclear weapons, but they often fight through their proxies. For instance, China and Russia are presently supporting Iran ( which is allied to them ) in its fight against USA.

The BRICS members are allied to one or the other of these 2 powerful alliances. For instance, Iran, is allied to China and Russia, while Saudi Arabia, UAE, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and Egypt are allied to USA and Europe. Some other countries like India are neutral. Among the partners, Cuba, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are allied to China and Russia, while Bolivia, Malaysia and Thailand are allied to USA and Europe.

Now what can such a disparate group achieve ? Their foreign policies are so different that little substantial will be resolved. Though USA and Europe are not in the organization, their allies are in it, and they will oppose any move or decision attacking the former. So, despite the fact that the 2 powerful nations, China and Russia are key players in BRICS, all that is likely to result at the end of the summit is announcement of a host of vapid platitudes, hokums, and commonplaces, like saying that there should be peace, friendship, and cooperation among  countries ( which really means nothing )

As I said before, the summit will only be ‘aamadam, guftam, barkhaastam’
