The Drama of the Strategic Retreat of the War as of Agastya Nanda.
The much awaited war movie Ikkis which features an upcoming star Agastya Nanda and the legendary Dharmendra is officially delayed again. The film was initially scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2025 but has since left the holiday timing slot to prevent being trampled by two giant films. With a strategy change, a move that will see the movie release in the theaters on January 1, 2026, the producers, Maddock Films, have affirmed that the movie will receive the attention it deserves.

The move is timed as the Indian box office is now experiencing a rare event of holdover doing well than new releases. The makers understood that launching a content based biographical drama during this commercial storm would be a financial suicide task. Rather than having an uphill battle with screens, they have decided to move on to the New Year with a clean slate and allows the film to breathe and get its audience without having to fight a battle.
Delay is a big disappointment to the fans who were looking forward to watch Dharmendra in what is being hyped as his last on-screen appearance. The senior actor is involved here in a key role in this Sriram Raghavan directorial that is founded on the life of a Second Lieutenant, the youngest to receive the Param Vir Chakra, Arun Khetarpal.
The move is however being hailed as a distribution strategy genius by industry insiders. In shifting to January, Ikkis would evade the head-on clash offered by the blockbuster action movies which are presently monopolizing all the single premium screens available in the nation. This is not the first time the producers have been successful with such a move, as they switched Chhaava to escape Pushpa 2 last year. This track record of smart decision-making is an indicator that they are putting a premium on the long-term profitability of the movie over the ego of a holiday release date.
The omnipotent power of Ranveer Singh is Dhurandhar.
This sudden fluctuation in the schedule is mostly caused by unprecedented box office blaze of spy thriller of Ranveer Singh, Dhurandhar. The directorial featuring Aditya Dhar released earlier in December has broken all the box office logic as it refused to diminish even in the third week.
The movie has already passed through the huge mark of 500 crore rupees within the country and it does not look tired. The theatres proprietors are claiming full houses of Dhurandhar even during working days and therefore they have to keep the movie in the prime screens they would have given to new releases. This “Dhurandhar Wave” has resulted in a shortage of screens which rendered a wide release to Ikkis almost impossible over the Christmas week.
The viewers have identified with the galloping pace and the patriotic passions of Dhurandhar and it is the first film to watch by both the family and the youth. The word-of-mouth is so powerful that repeat viewing is now becoming the norm and is further restricting the market. Such a juggernaut would have probably eclipsed and gone unnoticed by the general audience, a subtle biopic such as Ikkis. The producers knew that it is risky to compete with a mass entertainer that is currently on a hot streak. By keeping out of the way, they accept that Ranveer Singh is too dominating in the present to challenge him face on. This appreciation of the market reality can help Ikkis to avoid the fate of box office disaster.
The Shady Future of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
In case the competition among the domestic was insufficient, the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash by James Cameron has crowned the postponement. The third sequel of the popular sci-fi franchise in the world opened on December 19 and has already started to eat up the rest of the market share.
The Avatar brand in India is very strong and people are rushing to IMAX and 3D theaters to see the visual treatise. The movie has already acquired almost all the high-end large-format screens, which leaves virtually no chance that an alternative movie can create a visual impression. Exhibitors (contractually) are bound to provide Avatar with substantial number of shows; which compounds the space allowed to Hindi films.
The confrontation of Dhurandhar and Avatar: Fire and Ash has brought out a clash of titans situation where two gigantic blockbusters are battling to establish supremacy. With the stakes like that, a smaller, character-driven movie such as Ikkis would have been drowned out in the noise.
The marketing and hype of the Hollywood giant alone suffocates the local releases. Moving to January 1 Ikkis comes out of immediate blast radius of Avatar launch. It enables the hype of the sci-fi epic to subside and lets the audience take time to be desirous of another form of grounded and emotional storytelling which Sriram Raghavan is familiar with.
The Risk of a Solo Release Calculated.
The January 1, 2026 new release date provides Ikkis with something it never had during the Christmas week, namely, a solo release day. Dhurandhar and Avatar will be weeks old by the time the New Year arrives and the audience will be seeking new content. The week of January has traditionally been a profitable week of sleepers and content-driven movies. Movies such as Uri: The Surgical Strike (also directed by Aditya Dhar) were released in January and proceeded to make history. The producers of Ikkis are also looking to copy this trend by positioning their movie as the first big Bollywood of 2026.
This will also preclude a three-way confrontation with another Bollywood entertainer, Tu Meri Main Tera Tu Meri, featuring Kartik Aaryan, which is clinging on to its Christmas release. With Ikkis remaining on December 25, the audience would have been divided into three to watch an action thriller, a science-fiction monster, and a romantic comedy. Having been the fourth choice, would have been a catastrophe.
As there is a clear runway in January now, Agastya Nanda can shine without the direct comparison with Ranveer Singh and Kartik Aaryan. The solo release will mean that the marketing campaign is able to concentrate fully on the unique selling points of the film without necessarily screaming over the clamor of the competition.
