Pangong Lake, the Ladakh marvel at high altitudes is heavily exposed to climate change and human activities. The retreat of glaciers, permafrost degradation, unpredictable precipitation, and rising evaporation rates are draining the lake. Over-tourism, pollution, and military activities exacerbate the issue which impacts its ecological balance. Declining tourism has led to economic losses for the locals, migration, and cultural shifts. Sustenance tourism, climatic adaptation, and community-led endeavors would form a strong foundation for safeguarding this Himalayan jewel. The technical and the social dimensions of the crisis, accentuating the imperative need for quick intervention to preserve the Pangong Lake legacy, are discussed in this article.
