A young software engineer who works with Ola Electric in the Bengaluru office was reportedly found dead in his apartment last night. According to police sources, there was a note that was found at the scene that basically talked about extreme work pressure, mental harassment and unrealistic deadlines, which the employee had alleged that it was seriously affecting his mental health. According to the report, there were direct allusions to top management and the inhumane demands of the company in the note.

Bhavish Aggarwal was detained by Bengaluru Police to answer questions under the section of abetment and negligence at work within hours after the news appeared. Official accusations are not put forward, but it is reported that investigators are reviewing internal emails, chat logs, and staff feedback reports to establish whether the company had a blind eye to the fact that, in the past, employees have already encountered complaints about stress and verbal abuse at work.

The work culture of Ola is not in the spotlight the first time. Various reports have emerged in recent years as to the conditions in Ola Electric and Ola Cabs as being hostile, intimidating, and overly demanding. Other former workers have come out anonymously to narrate how they have been humiliated during a meeting, made to work overnight, and even threatened with being fired because of failure to meet deadlines.

An 2024 investigative story published in a leading business magazine had already created a bleak picture of the corporate environment at Ola, in which Bhavish Aggarwal is depicted as a visionary leader who is also authoritarian and intolerant of dissent. Although Aggarwal justified his leadership approach as performance based, his opponents claimed that his approach created an atmosphere of fear and burnout.

The HR department of the company has also allegedly entered an emergency mode after the recent tragedy, erasing internal communications that were sensitive, and blocking employees access to the specific Slack channels and emails. A number of employees, who did so anonymously, told the reporters that there was no secret that this was going to happen. They also alleged that grievances on mental health and overworking were ignored regularly.

In the social media, the outcry has been fast and rampant. The hashtag #JusticeForOlaEmployee started to trend on X (previously Twitter) hours on end, and now netizens were holding the company and its leaders accountable. It was also mentioned by many users that the culture of overworking employees by the name of hustle culture has become notorious in India in the framework of the startup scene.

According to the legal professionals, in case the investigators locate viable evidence of managerial misconduct resulting in the death of the employee, Bhavish Aggarwal may be severely punished by system provisions of the Indian Penal Code touching on abetment of suicide and corporate negligence. It will also be the turn of the Ministry of Labour, where they are also reported to have initiated a special investigation on the internal HR practices at Ola.

In the meantime, Ola has issued a short statement in which it regrets the loss of its employee, but has not admitted any wrong. The company stated that it was fully cooperating with the authorities and was determined to carry out its employees in any manner possible. The critics, however, claim that these declarations have been made commonplace damage control and hardly translate into actual accountability.

The tragic incident, as the investigation is still underway, has prompted a resurgence of the national discussion about the unhealthy startup culture in India, in which the excessive number of working hours, unattainable objectives, and disregard of mental health have already become a standard. The death of a young professional in these conditions has made the industry leaders along with the government to face the ugly truth behind the so-called innovation boom in India.
