The statistics are out. They’re all so ugly! Chand Mera Dil is the latest romantic action drama to be released by Karan Johar, released in theatres on 22nd May 2026. A lighthearted Gen-Z love story was all that was needed to draw in the crowds. A young cast, a new director, the huge Dharma Productions label. It was supposed to be a success. But the facts are bitter medicine. The movie has been sinking at the moment. It has just managed to collect Rs 26.30 crore net in India after 12 days in theatres. This is a huge disappointment.

The film has been headed by Lakshya and Ananya Panday. It was directed by Vivek Soni. Two college sweethearts, Aarav and Chandni, are the protagonists of the story. They have no choice but to deal with an unplanned pregnancy and grow up quickly. Actually, it sounds like a good arrangement of an emotional ride. The problem is simple. It wasn’t attended by anyone really. The movie didn’t even hit the 20 crores mark after the first week. It sold off just Rs. 19.45 crore during the initial seven days. If it’s a big studio that’s behind a project, you’re going to get a bigger splash. There was virtually no buzz around the pre-release. A dharma movie typically has songs playing on all the radios in the movie. It was a quiet promotion this time around. It feels like it were almost as if the makers knew what was coming.

To the empty theaters, the Daily Grind!

It’s as if watching this movie is like watching a slow-motion car accident. It was opened on Friday and started with a weak 3 crore. It was a mere bump upwards to 3.65 crore on Saturday. Sunday saw 4.25 crore. However, the most important test that comes on Monday? A complete failure. The collections fell back to 2.25 crore. From there on in, things were going downhill. The second week is even worse! The movie only managed to draw 1 crore on its 11th and 12th day.

Theater owners are taking a big hit. During the first week, the movie is playing in about 3,700 locations. That was reduced to approximately 2,600 shows by week two. Even the large number of screens are not occupied. Shockingly, the occupancy rates are very low. The morning shows were filling up about 6 percent. That means that one could enter a huge movie theatre and count the people on one hand! On the other hand, night shows fared slightly better in big cities, with around 34 per cent. There was a slight interest in Pune and Bengaluru. Interestingly, Chennai was the most crowded at 55 per cent, only due to the fact that they had 10 shows running across the city. Just a few good night shows won’t save a sinking ship. Overall world wide gross is at 34.90 crore after nearly 2 weeks. The overseas market was interested in the film, but it has attracted less than 4 crore.

The Shadow of Corporate Booking

If the film fails to take off this badly, there’ll be rumors afoot. The major issue in the debate over Chand Mera Dil currently is corporate bookings. Now this is something that is common knowledge in the Hindi film industry. In some cases, production companies purchase multiple tickets for their films. That’s to boost the box office figures and give the impression that the disaster was a small success. It helps the investors to not get too worked up and it helps to preserve the star’s ego.

Social media and trade platforms alike are speccing at the manufactures. But it is widely believed that the numbers on the weekdays are entirely bogus. They think that the studio is trying to wash its hands. The producers even went so far as a “Buy One Get One” ticket promotion last week on Monday, aiming to get the audience into the movie. Even that was not enough to make a significant difference.

Because, the actor duo of Chaitanynya and Karan Johar have talked on this topic in recent times. He said in an interview on a trade podcast that it does happen that people will purchase their own tickets because of the filmmakers. He straightforwardly inquired as to why people would care if a producer uses his own money to feel good. He literally termed it a ‘self-booking trend’. It’s nothing the industry does to boost its self-image, he said, and “no one cares whether the film is good or bad. For trade analysts who monitor real footfalls, however, it’s a huge headache. The truth is known by distributors and cinema chains who witness the empty lobbies. But the public is served a public relation’s image of box office stability.

What a tale of a genre that is in serious trouble!

There’s more to it than a single flop. These days, there is serious trouble in the romance and soft drama genre. Today’s audiences crave big shows in the post-2020 world. They are looking for big action, jaw dropping effects or explosive thrill. There simply was no need to drag a young man or woman out of the house in a simple tale of young love and grown-up duties. So why pay for tickets and popcorn when you can see the same thing on a streaming service four weeks later?

Chand Mera Dil walked straight into such a pit. Some readers consider the plot of early marriage to be rather quaint. For others, it simply sounds like a late night TV marathon on a Sunday afternoon. Also, the leads are a factor to be taken into account. Ananya Panday has a good fan base online, but is having trouble carrying her load on the big screen. Lakshya is a fairly new name looking to make a mark. Linking them up in a non-showy love story was a very big risk, but it ultimately paid off. It did not pay off.

The Last Box Office Destiny

The film’s run in the theater is quickly coming to a close. New films will be released this weekend. Movies like Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Peddi and Bandar are likely to fill the majority of the screens. Theater operators will swiftly switch out a dud romantic play with new material to keep the lights burning.
