Ranveer Singh vs. the film workers union has now turned real. The actor issued a formal notice to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) on June 2, 2026. They are a huge trade body at Bollywood. It is a voice for thousands of workers on the wage-roll. The actor has rebelled against their recent ‘non-cooperation directive’. The federation’s attorneys state that it only has the authority and jurisdiction to intervene in a contract dispute between him and his producers

This is a move that is very uncommon. Generally, great actors are not typically seen to join the largest labor union in the industry via lawyers. Typically, these are issues that are addressed in hushed tones and behind closed doors. The exact details of what Singh demanded in his legal papers are still a secret. The message is clear, however. He is not about to give up. FWICE has decided to hold a press conference on June 3 to explain their side of the story and deal with this sudden escalation. It’s going to be a very stressful media moment.

Why The Conflict Started With Don 3

In order to grasp the messiness of things, let’s take a look at the movie that is soon to be released, Don 3. This was supposed to be a gigantic venture for the Hindi film industry. The movie is helmed by Farhan Akhtar, who is also the producer of the movie. The movie is directed and produced by Farhan Akhtar through his banner Excel Entertainment. In 2023, the creators revealed that the new face of the iconic franchise will be Ranveer Singh. He was the replacement of Shah Rukh Khan. There was lots of excitement among fans. A slick teaser was released. The movie was slated to start filming in 2026

After that, it all went wrong. Singh quit the film just a couple of weeks prior to the massive shooting that was supposed to start. So far, there is no confirmed information about why he is leaving. Some say it was a creative difference, others say it was a scheduling clash. However, the sudden exit came as a surprise to the whole cast and crew. All he did was pull back just at the end of pre-production.

Creating a movie is very costly. By the end of 2025, Excel Entertainment had entered into pre-production mode. It takes months to design sets for an action film. International shooting programs were probably suspended.Possibly international shooting schedules were blocked. Hundreds of crew were hired and sitting around waiting for their first day to start work

The lead actor departed, leaving the producers with a rather big bill. They say they incurred a direct loss of Rs 40-45 crore as a result of his sudden departure. So much time, money and effort, all lost on scheduling and getting everything set up before the first frame of shooting even happens. Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani were obviously irked. They immediately approached the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association to file a formal complaint. The directors’ body reviewed the complaint and felt that it was too large to be managed by them alone. They then referred the entire situation to FWICE for more robust action!

What is The Non-Cooperation Directive?

FWICE didn’t hold back. On May 25, after they claim Singh repeatedly ignored their invitations to come in person and talk, they issued their directive. They basically ordered more than 4 lakh employees of the film industry not to work on any film where Ranveer Singh is involved.

The media immediately began referring to it as a “ban. It wasn’t a full ban but the federation had to clarify that later. They claimed they were only trying to spare producers from “egregious financial exposure. They do not see it as a good practice for actors to drop out at the last minute or risk ruining film schedules and losing their daily wages on a regular basis. However, whichever term you use, the impact on the ground is significant. It makes it virtually impossible for the actor to shoot any movie in Mumbai right now. If the camera crew, the lightmen and the make-up artists don’t show up on set, then you can’t film a scene.

The Actor Keeps A Measured Silence

Singh didn’t begin to vent his anger on social media despite the opposition from a union of 4 lakh members. On the same day that the directive was issued, his official communiqué gave a very calm statement.

He didn’t contest the loss of Rs 45 crore. He didn’t even go on the offensive against the producer or Farhan Akhtar in particular. The actor also said that he has the utmost respect for the entire film fraternity and the Don franchise. He feels that professional matters and relationships should be dealt with in a mature and dignified manner. He essentially told the world that he prefers to deal with his business in private, rather than going through public drama. But that maturity was curtailed on June 2 by his lawyers.

Industry Voices Step In

The movie industry is a small world, and they have an opinion. This is no longer a one act play. It is a bigger issue whether or not a trade union can compelled an actor to resign from his/her job due to a broken contract.

Veteran movie producer TP Aggarwal has got in on the law suit. He was also the ex-president of Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association. He even filed a legal petition at the Bombay Civil Court (Dindoshi) against FWICE. He believes no union or trade body can legally prohibit an individual or command crews not to work with someone. The court has sent out notices to the federation already.
