Varun Dhawan was at the big screen once again with his latest romantic comedy film, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. This project was directed by David Dhawan. This marked yet another collaboration with his son. The film released in theaters on June 5, 2026, with the intention to sell tickets to the summer holiday crowds. The opening day attendance figures, although high, showed a bit of reluctance from audiences nationally. The movie managed to gross about Rs 7.75 crore Friday
In India, the weekend is generally a highly profitable time for family-oriented comedies to release as there are a flurry of sales. But, the earnings from this Ramesh Taurani film on the Saturday were surprisingly low, as they collected just Rs 7.50 crore. The situation was a bit clearer on Sunday with a 20 percent increase. This brought the day’s tally to Rs 8.50 crore. The weekend show took the net collection of the film to Rs 24 crore in India. These early numbers were closely watched by trade analysts to assess the movie’s theatrical performance.
The Crucial Monday Test is a test that is applied on Monday.
The first Monday is when everything is put to the test for a new release, as working hours continue. The numbers were down dramatically at the start of this new week for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The day after it started, the collections dropped almost 60 percent. It did come in with a paltry Rs 3.25 crore on Monday. This dramatic decline brought the gross of the four-day period at domestic box office to Rs 27 crore. This is a big dip, which shows a big problem during the working week
The multi-starrer comedy had a slightly different look on its opening weekend in overseas markets. The film has made Rs 8.50 crore in international territories by end of Sunday. The domestic gross earnings amount to Rs 28.80 crore and when added to the gross earnings in the world, it comes to Rs 37.30 crore in three days. Fortunately, on a global scale these figures are a bit more comforting. But a steep fall in the home market on Monday is a big challenge, however. The project requires a consistent collection of the waste on weekdays to be able to cover costs.
Strength of the competition from the south.
One of the big factors in terms of screen numbers and attendance is the direct competition with another big release. At the same time, Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor’s sports-action drama Peddi was also on the theaters. In that part of the world, the show wasn’t even close. It crossed Rs 150 crore mark in India alone over the weekend. Peddi boasts a worldwide gross of over Rs 230 crore. This put the Varun Dhawan comedy in a much lower place with regard to the overall money that was collected
The screen occupancy rates clearly show the huge split in audiences’ choice over the weekend. The overall occupancy of the romantic comedy was at around 26.75 percent throughout the nation on Sunday. The most popular shows were in the afternoon and evening. Major metropolitan areas reported rather underwhelming numbers. The occupancy rate in Delhi-NCR at 954 scheduled shows barely touched 19.8 per cent. Meanwhile, the Ram Charan action vehicle had house full boards in various southern and northern circuit at the same time.
The budget and production realities will determine this.
This feature was co-produced by both the film production companies – Tips Films and Maximilian Films, and the estimated cost of the production was Rs 50-55 crore. This figure will need to be made back through a long run in the theatres before the movie goes to streaming services. The plot is about a man with two pregnant spouses. The story was written by Yunus Sajawal, and the dialogues were written by Farhad Samji. It stars the likes of Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde. They play as the female leads with Varun Dhawan.
The rest of the cast comprising of veteran actors such as Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, and Chunky Panday. The inclusion of Cameo Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav and Manoj Pahwa was well promoted to attract audience. The film cast a pantheon of familiar faces, but failed to convert them into box office numbers. The music was a very costly production. They introduced several composers such as Tanishk Bagchi, Javed-Mohsin to churn out chart-toppers.
Previous Track Records
Varun Dhawan had his last big opening with his 2012 film Border 2. The much-anticipated sequel went on to gross Rs 30 crore on its first day. It was a huge standard for the actor to follow. The second day, those amounts reached greater heights, at Rs 36.50 crore. It demonstrated his capacity to rake in the crowds when the opportunity arose. That’s a whole lot of people and just one of them’s little, and that’s a testament to the ever-changing nature of the film industry.
David Dhawan is still one of the prolific comedy directors in the history of Hindi film industry. He had previously mentored his son in a number of enterprises he had successfully launched—a dependable brand of slapstick. However, the taste of the urban multiplex viewers has changed with a preference for more traditional humor. The current theatrical returns indicate that there is a shift. Hugging the past and the old comedy formula may not bring in all the big money at the box office.
The State of Mid-Scale Films
As we’ve seen in the past, the medium-size romantic comedy is suffering mightily in the world of show business these days. Theaters are no longer reserved for audiences for blockbuster action scenes, or event movies. The existing eight-week theatrical window prior to a movie on a streaming platform has basically transformed the viewing habits of people. So many potential ticket buyers just simply wait for two months. But they don’t want to go to the movies to watch smaller films, they want to watch them in the comfort of their own homes and that’s why they are interested in you.
It’s a conditioning that directly challenges the box office power of the romantic-comedy genre, according to industry watchers. Discussions are still ongoing among producers to extend the window of streaming to 6 months. The intent of this is to encourage theatre goers. While that’s not happening, films such as Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai will be hit hard. With no new big movies to buoy it, the David Dhawan-directed film has now turned to other means to secure decent figures.
