“Game Changer,” a directorial venture of S. Shankar and the lead starring actor being Ram Charan, is expected to be a game changer in Telugu cinema. The film, however, does not work on many levels and is nothing but a letdown for both the audiences and critics.
Plot and Storyline
It is the story of an IPS officer named Ram Nandan, who happens to be the district collector. He tries to fight against corruption and brings himself closer to the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
The promise seems exciting, but it is extremely disappointing in execution. The predictable story with no innovation in plot twist or interesting subplots creates more confusion because of the incoherence in the narrative structure. Lack of originality makes it unmemorable.
Direction and Pacing
Well, director S. Shankar, who is renowned for his magnificence in filmmaking, seems to commit a blunder with “Game Changer.
” There is no steadiness in its pacing; the film drags at some points and rushes through other places, offering little time to develop characters or connect with audiences.
The transition of scenes abruptly cuts into the next one, and this disrupts the flow of the story while making the entire storytelling less effective.
The characterization by Ram Charan is too thin and artificial. As of his brilliant work in “RRR,” it feels rather superficial as Ram Nandan’s characterization and there seems to be very less variation of emotion as such all throughout the film.
Supporting casts such as Kiara Advani and S. J. Suryah also appear just normal but could not give that necessary strength to the entire movie.
Script and Dialogue
Script is the weakest spot of “Game Changer.” Dialogues are overloaded with common sense and just very surface level characterization.
Characters’ conversation, often enough, appears artificial and unnatural; it ruins the whole believability of the film. Such richness in the depth of writing fails to stir up a feel from the audience regarding the entire sequence.
Technical Aspects
Despite budget, the technicality of “Game Changer” is very disheartening. Unimpressive cinematography, which boast not much good visuals, does not make the case.
Shankar’s editing does not seem to get sharp, thus sustaining the tension from the story. An effect-oriented Shankar’s special-effect-oriented film that managed to turn into a big disappointment with bad effects seems rather not astonishing and has no usage either.
The composition by Thaman S cannot be remembered at all and lacks the energy for keeping pace with action on the screen.
Audience reaction
The film was met with a mixed reaction from the viewers. It is known that 37% of the audience left the theatre in the middle and termed some scenes as illogical and the film boring.
The movie has a rating of 5.9 out of 10, according to IMDb, and the implication is that viewers are very dissatisfied.
Box Office Business
“Game Changer” grossed ₹75 crore worldwide on its opening day. However, whispers do the rounds that these numbers are being sold up by an astonishing 30-40% to give an illusion of success.
Even if these numbers stand on their own merit, they are misleading stakeholders and tarnishing the reputation of box office reporting.
Career of Ram Charan After RRR
After the massive success of “RRR,” the expectations from his next projects were sky-high. “Game Changer” is no exception to that, and unfortunately, it goes downhill in the career graph of Ram Charan.
The reason for this movie not connecting with the audience can be attributed to the scripts he has chosen or the direction he is taking his career.
Comparison with Previous Films
Comparatively, Game Changer is a step back from Ram Charan’s past work, both in terms of quality and to the audience’s benefit.
The dull storytelling and lack of character growth compared to stories that speak for themselves and good performances that mark his previous victories show stark contrasts.
Summary: More of a failure for the director S. Shankar as well as his star Ram Charan in Game Changer.
A weak storyline, bad direction, unsatisfactory acting, and inadequate technicals coming together makes it a forgetful and disappointing film.
It probably must have come as a hard lesson to learn for Ram Charan as realizing the importance of script selection came along with realizing the discovery of directors who actually get the best out of him.
With a rating of 3 out of 10, “Game Changer” fails to make a positive impact on his career and leaves audiences yearning for the caliber of cinema he has previously delivered.
