The city of Delhi is preparing for a big storm on 6th June. It’s not simply a political rally. It’s about an extremely young and extremely angry group known as ‘Cockroach Janta Party’. They demand that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hurry and board the bus to pack his bags and depart. They are on a mission to make it happen at Jantar Mantar.
And they are not coming as individuals. Sonam Wangchuk has simply joined them. He threatened the government in a nonchalant tone. If he doesn’t resign by June 5, he goes with the kids on the street.
The establishment is going on the offensive. Senior cabinet sources are sounding alarms over this being “no longer just a student protest.” They have been describing it as a hijacked movement. They’re pointing fingers at foreign money. They singled out the “Soros Gang” and anti-India networks. The battle lines are completely drawn.
The origin of the fire in a paper leak incident.Paper leak caused a fire.
The reason behind why thousands of children are prepared to march is just by looking at the NEET-UG examination. It was early last month. It was taken by more than 22 lakh medical aspirants. Soon rumors began to spread about guess papers getting leaked on WhatsApp. Soon it was no longer a rumour. The government admitted the command chain was completely breached.
Students panicked. Some killed themselves. The exam was eventually scrapped and pushed to June 21. But the fury died down not. It exploded.
In the middle of this turmoil the CJI made a statement in the Supreme court on a completely different matter. He had a problem with fake lawyers and Internet activists. He referred to some of these young people who were jobless as parasites and cockroaches.
That was the spark. Abhijeet Dipke was hurt by that insult, and he wore it on his chest. He started the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in mid-May. It landed straight into the air. In just days, they had 20 million followers on Instagram. The message was clear. If the system perceives that we are insects, then we will behave like insects. Dipke has been out of the country. However he reserved a return ticket. He arrives in Delhi on June 6th. He has announced that he will head straight for Parliament Street police station and demand space at Jantar Mantar.
The Wangchuk Factor
A mob of irate students on the internet is quite another. The government is in a position to manage Internet trends. However, Sonam Wangchuk came into the picture.
Wangchuk is a Ladakhi Engineer. People know him. They respect him. For decades he has been constructing schools for children who do not speak Hindi or English. He created hot tents for the Indian Army. He is the one who just woke up from a severe hunger strike in Delhi for constitutional rights for Ladakh. You can’t simply dismiss him as some random internet troll.
Wangchuk released his video in Hindi on June 2. He seemed to be very serious. On paper, he said, he enjoyed the new National Education Policy. But when he sees what is actually going on down there, he becomes ill. He clearly asked for the NEET paper leak and other issues. He added that if any minister of education in a normal democracy would want to stay on in his position the following day.
Next was the ultimatum. Wangchuk told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Dharmendra Pradhan needs to resign by June 5. But if Pradhan refuses to leave his seat, Wangchuk said, he’ll have no option. On June 6, he will go and sit with the CJP at Jantar Mantar. He said to his followers to ask themselves a question. If not us, who? If not now, when?
The Soros Gang Warning
The establishment is set for a trap. They observe a student issue turning into an attack on a union minister. They were going to turn the script around quickly.
The counter-attack is swift and vicious. The government is presenting itself as the victim of innocent students being pawns in its game. They allege that they are being funded by dark money and foreign players.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju came to the defense of the administration and Pradhan. He went online and issued a caustic warning. He didn’t hold back. He expressed pity towards people who have to beg followers from Pakistan and “George Soros gang”.
It’s a big charge to level. Soros is a U.S. billionaire. The Indian government has previously alleged that he is funding India’s regime-change efforts against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government is attempting to discredit the CJP by linking them to Soros. Rijiju said that there is a lot of energetic youth in India. He believes that no one needs to be validated by any anti-India gang. One minister, Sukanta Majumdar even asserted that almost half of the CJP’s online followers are fake accounts, who are based in Pakistan. Dipke posted screen recordings denying this, which indicated that his audience consisted of a large amount of Indians. However, the political harm was the reason it was done.
The upper level’s message is quite clear. The government is willing to admit the exams were botched. They handed over the NEET investigation to the CBI. CBI Director Praveen Sood and National Testing Agency (NTA) chief Abhishek Singh even had to present a Parliamentary Standing Committee on the mess. They did catch a couple of low-level players. However, the students say that’s not enough. The ones at the top want him to take the blame. The government is putting up a strong front against the protests. They are positioning June 6 as an overseas backed attempt to destabilize the country in the guise of Students rights.
The Clock is Ticking
The longhorns are on the verge of a big crash. According to Dipke, already more than eight lakh people have signed a petition calling for the firing of Pradhan. The CJP is calling for police approval to hold peaceful protest. They are instructing students to maintain a non-violent approach.
However the Delhi Police is under the Home Ministry. Jantar Mantar is a well controlled area. Earlier this week, other groups of students protested outside the Education Ministry, but the police already had a group of students arrested.
