World Environment Day

Today, 5th June, is being observed throughout the world as World Environment Day ( hereinafter referred to as WED ). In 1972, the UN General Assembly, to raise awareness of the dangers to the environment, and motivate countries to take steps to safeguard it, declared 5th June as WED.

The objects of WED are given in these articles :

This year the Republic of Azerbaijan is hosting the global commemoration of WED, with the official celebrations taking place in the capital city of Baku.

In my opinion, WED is just a stunt and a gimmick, like Swatchata Abhiyan, Yoga Day, etc in India.

In Baku no doubt a lot of wining and dining and revelry must be going on today, as in many parts of the world, but in the end it will be, to use an oft quoted Persian expression, ‘aamadam, guftam, barkhaastam’ ( i.e. we came, gossiped, and departed ) but zero haasildam.

I say this because today the biggest polluters of the environment are the developed countries such as USA, China, UK, and Russia, which are the most powerful, and therefore the most influential countries in the world. Their primary aim is to help their companies make huge profits, with only secondary, perfunctory, or peripheral regard for the environment, and often by paying it only lip service.

Rich economies are still the greatest GHG ( Green House Gases ) emitters per capita. USA and Australia spew eight times more per head than developing countries like India, Indonesia and Brazil.

Though they have the world’s highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions, and though they often transfer polluting industries to underdeveloped countries, in confronting climate change developed countries continue to shift the blame to underdeveloped countries, and have failed to fulfill their own obligations. The familiar scene could have resurfaced and caused tensions at the 26th United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.
Xie Zhenhua, China Special Envoy for Climate Change, noted  in Glasgow that “rich nations made a significant pledge to channel $100 billion a year to less wealthy nations for environment protection by 2020 twelve years ago, but this pledge has not been fulfilled.”

The transfer of polluting industries from developed to developing countries, a phenomenon economists call the Pollution Haven Hypothesis, is a major driver of global environmental inequality. Driven by stricter environmental laws in wealthy nations, multinational corporations relocate emission-heavy, toxic, and resource-intensive manufacturing to less-developed countries, primarily for cheaper labor and regulatory loopholes

This situation is unlikely to change, considering the power and clout of the developed countries.

Consequently, WED will remain a gimmick, shenanigan, tomfoolery, lark, dido and caper
